The story is set in the small coastal fishing community of Fjällbacka. A young boy playing near the King’s Ravine discovers the body of a young woman, but the police find more than they bargained for: underneath her are the skeletal remains of two other girls who disappeared twenty years earlier.Detective Patrik Hedström leads the investigation while navigating his personal life with his pregnant partner, Erica Falck. The search for the killer centers on the Hults, a local family of religious fanatics and criminals with many dark secrets.

The story begins with a fatal shooting in a London squat, where the victim is discovered to be a former police officer. DI Anna Travis investigates and soon finds the case linked to Alexander Fitzpatrick, a notorious and dangerous drug trafficker who has been missing for over a decade.

The story follows Richard Turnbull, an acclaimed composer dealing with his wife's schizophrenia. His life is further upended when he learns his daughter, Pia, has been murdered in East Africa. He travels to Kenya to investigate her death, leading him into a web of ancient secrets and a mysterious woman.

The story centers on Pepys Road, an ordinary street in South London where property prices have skyrocketed. The residents—ranging from a wealthy investment banker to a Zimbabwean traffic warden and a Senegalese football prodigy—all receive a mysterious postcard that says: "We Want What You Have." As they grapple with this unsettling message, their lives are further upended by the looming global financial crash
