Set against the backdrop of World War II, the story begins in Paris in 1939 and follows the separate, perilous journeys of two lovers torn apart by the conflict.

• Gerhard von Meerbach: Despite his internal opposition to the Nazi regime, Gerhard fights for the German Fatherland, hoping for a chance to rid the country of Hitler while surviving the brutal attrition of the Battle of Stalingrad.
• Saffron Courtney: Recruited by the Special Operations Executive (SOE), Saffron is sent to occupied Belgium to uncover Nazi infiltration within the resistance network, only to find herself hunted by a ruthless German spymaster.
