Set in present-day Hong Kong, the novel follows the lives of three American women—Mercy, Margaret, and Hilary—who are part of the expatriate community. An unspeakable tragedy links two of the women and their individual perspectives are woven together, exploring themes of motherhood, grief, identity, privilege, and belonging in a foreign land.
